Greater Shepparton has a long history of migration. Fortunes were made of the back of tenacious hard workers who came here to begin a new life in a new country. The last Census data in 2011 had our non-English speaking background population at 9.99%, with 13% born from a country other than Australia. I’d imagine the next census will be a lot higher since we are experiencing another wave of migration, due natural forces as well as global instability.

From experience, I’ve found each culture to be engaging, friendly and tolerant. There are many active members of the CALD community who are ambassadors for young people and there are plenty of opportunities for economic development and leadership roles.

Services must keep up with demand and existing skills must be fast-tracked in order to assist new arrivals in reaching their full potential. Council must liaise with all tiers of government to ensure policy is fair, well resourced and no one is left behind.
