Parkrun is an international fitness event, where participants volunteer, run or walk 5kms every Saturday morning and results are collated online for comparison across countries. I’m pleased Council has been supportive of this group and so proud organisers pushed ahead through red-tape to make it happen at Shepparton’s iconic Victoria Park Lake.
After meeting Steve Moneghetti when he was guest speaker at Council’s GV Brain event, he offered to come along and run with us, smashing a new record, taking time to speak with the crowd and offering photos with some of the younger participants.
After a suggestion by organisers that permanent markers be affixed to the running track, I brought it up at a Council briefing and they were promptly installed. Considering our lake is home to Challenge Triathlon, Sailability, Aquamoves and rowing clubs, it’s a logical sporting hub. From humble beginnings, Shepparton Parkrun now regularly boasts over 100 participants, spreading the message of fitness in both body and mind.
